Biography

Laura Karpman is a composer who brings feverish imagination, impeccable musicianship, complexity, versatility and unbridled joy to her music. Through a rigorous, fearless approach, coupled with conceptual and progressive uses of technology and recording, Karpman's music reflects the acoustic lens of a true 21st century American composer.

Named one of the most important women in Hollywood by Variety Magazine, Karpman was a fellow and advisor to The Sundance Institute and she has served as Department Chair for Berklee College of Music's new graduate film scoring program. She has also lectured at The Juilliard School, where she earned her Doctorate, as well as USC, Mills College, and Columbia College, and is a professor at UCLA in the School of Theater, Film and Television and the Herb Alpert School of Music.

Commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Karpman's multimedia Ask Your Mama, written for Jessye Norman, premiered to critical acclaim. Ask Your Mama premiered at The Hollywood Bowl in 2009 and was performed at the Apollo Theater in 2013. Other recent concert music commissions have included The Hidden World of Girls, a multimedia work in collaboration with NPR's The Kitchen Sisters, as well as works for the Juilliard School and the Czech National Symphony. Karpman is currently developing multimedia works for percussionist Evelyn Glennie, a new opera with New York Times columnist Gail Collins, as well as completing the recording and film of Ask Your Mama.
