Biography

Miriam Cutler has been writing, producing, and performing music for over 25 years and is based out of Los Angeles. She is an Emmy nominated film composer whose scores have been featured in a variety of projects from film, television, and even two circuses. But her passion for non fiction films has led to a focus on working within that community and providing music for a number of Oscar nominated and Emmy award-winning documentaries. She is known for her versatility, her integration of world music styles, and working collaboratively.

She began her musical career as a singer/horn player in several bands, including the popular Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. She also led the New Miss Alice Stone Ladies Society Orchestra and the jazzy Swingstreet, writing most of their music and arrangements, producing several recordings, and touring with them. Her love of jazz led to years booking a popular jazz club in LA and co-producing albums for Polygram Verve including two Grammy nominated albums for Joe Williams, as well as albums for Nina Simone, Marlena Shaw, and Shirley Horn.

She has served on documentary juries including the first-ever World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance, the Independent Spirit Awards, International Documentary Association Awards, American Film Institute Festival Awards, and more. Miriam is a long-time board member of "The Society of Composers and Lyricists", has been an advisor for the Sundance Institute Documentary Composers Lab since 2003, and recently became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This year she was invited to serve as a Film/Music Expert for the US State Department American Film Showcase Cultural Diplomacy program for whom she's already traveled to Malaysian Borneo.
